Reimagining the Role of Children’s Museums in Education

By Maria Giulia Voltini, Natalie Williams, and Mary Anne Ullery

The Museum Playful Learning Collective (MPLC), led by Miami Children’s Museum, is redefining education by integrating classrooms into museum spaces, creating immersive and engaging learning experiences. With 17 museum schools across 11 states, including notable partners like the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center, the MPLC fosters collaboration between educators and museum staff, promoting hands-on, STEAM-focused education. Its initiatives, such as the Kindergarten Transition Survey and international outreach, aim to understand and expand the transformative role of museum-based learning.

The collective encourages global participation, particularly from European museums, to expand the impact of museum schools on early childhood education. By fostering a shared vision of playful learning, the MPLC seeks to inspire and empower children, families, and communities.
